Dog Breeding Fundamentals

Before you start dog breeding as a business or past time, you should first know about its fundamentals.

When you decide to do something, you should set your goals. This is also true with dog breeding. First on the list is good temperament; the dogs you breed should have good temperament so that future owners will not hesitate to care for them. As a breeder, it is your responsibility to lookout for unexpected changes in the behavior of the dogs like shyness, fear, excessive activities, and negative response to leave their common environment. Such characteristics are easily passed to their puppies. Genetics is a very important factor when breeding dogs and you should ensure that good temperament is passed on to the puppies. Try to check if the ancestral genes of the dogs possess good temperament.

Many breeders tend to put a male and a female dog in a certain room in the hope that the dogs will mate eventually. This is wrong. You must be certain that the female dog is already sexually matured so that she can be impregnated. The heat period will often start from the 6-month to one year. Still, this is not the perfect time for breeding. You need to wait until the female dog reaches two years or so because this is the best time for the female to carry a pup.

Good breed of pups can be realized if you’ve chosen the perfect parents. The male and female dogs should not possess any inborn or inherited faults. Get to know the dog breed by discovering more about their ancestors. You must ensure that the mother dog does not possess negative characteristics such as savageness and shyness. The male dog determines the sex of the puppies because he possesses the sex chromosomes. As a breeder, you should also ensure that the male does not have any reproductive difficulties. Such defects are hard to correct; if the male does not have enough sperm, the female will not be impregnated.

Before you start dog breeding, you should be well informed about the ancestry of the dogs you’re handling. You should determine the mixed, recessive, and dominant characteristics of the dogs. Dog breeding is a rewarding activity; you can increase the number of your pets through breeding and you can also earn money if you decide to embark on a business venture. You should be prepared mentally and physically. Why? Well, dog breeding requires breeders to conduct a lot of research. You will need to spend a lot of time researching because if you’re not well informed, you’re not going to be a good breeder.

Dog breeding has its advantages. You can raise many pups which you can take care at home or you can also share them with your relatives and friends. Puppies make excellent gifts, right? If you want, you can also sell the puppies. Good natured and intelligent pups are saleable and since most households have pet dogs, you will mot find it hard to get a buyer.

Now that you know the fundamentals of dog breeding, you should find out more about the different dog breeding methods such as line breeding, cross breeding, and out breeding. Take your time in reading books and other information materials. Don’t forget to consult the expert breeders in your area as well as the local vet; these people can help you.

Tips When Dog Breeding

Not everyone has the interest to breed dogs. To some, it may be a calling of some sort. For others, it serves as a past time and to increase their pets at home. Your goal here is to improve a certain breed of dog and if you have a different reason, you should think twice about it.

True enough, there are lots of books and dog breeding sites out there that claim they can help you in breeding dogs. Well, here’s the sad part- it’s quite different when you’re doing the actual stuff.

If you own a pet, you probably won’t know if your dog has a genetic problem unless an expert tells you so. You don’t have any idea about dams getting lost, struggling bitches, or breech births. The only things you know are how to groom your pet, give them exercise, and feeding them. Being a breeder is much more complicated because you need to attend to a lot of things.

If you want to become a successful dog breeder, here are helpful tips for you:

• Find a reputable vet in your area. Have your female dog examined to ensure that she is in perfect condition and in the peak of health. You should also request the vet to assist you in getting a certification that your dog is free from inherited diseases or genetic problems.

• Since you own the female dog, you need to prepare your place to house puppies in the near future. You can designate a room in your house for the whelping or you can build another room near the garage; that is, if you still have extra space on your yard.

• Get a certificate from the kennel club or the AKC. Cross breds don’t get good standards but if you have a purebred, much better.

• Find a reputable stud owner. If you can’t find one locally, you might want to look somewhere else. You should also check for the past performance of the stud. You can also try the new studs as they command lower fees but you may be at risk. It’s a good idea to stick with the reputable and experienced stud owners because they can assist during the whelping stage and in caring for your pups.

• Don’t forget to check for the certificate of the stud. The dog should also be free from any genetic faults and conditions like brucellosis, eye problems, etc. Even dogs have sexually transmitted diseases so always be on guard.

• Exercise your female dog but be careful because at this stage, the dog is very sensitive.

• Mating should be done at the place of the stud and not yours. Prepare your female to go to the place of the stud.

• For best results, mating should be initiated on the 9-13th day when the female is in heat.

• The female is often uncomfortable during mating but you need to ensure that the ‘tie’ lasts for about 10 minutes for best results.

• Pregnancy can be confirmed 3 weeks after the mating. Check with your vet.

If your dog is pregnant, you now have to prepare for whelping and for caring of the pups. You will also do a lot of paperwork for the registration and selling of the pups. Good luck.

Dog Breeding Considerations

Good temperament is very important when it comes to dog breeding. According to expert breeders, it’s not a good idea to breed dogs with temperament problems because it causes the degeneration of the general temperament of a particular dog breed. This should be an important consideration when you’re dealing with Rottweiler, Doberman Pinschers, and many other dog breeds.

Try to observe your dog closely. If you’re dog is a fear-biter, excitable, aggressive to humans, and untrustworthy especially in the presence of people, forget about breeding your dog. Submissive and shy dogs are also not good to breed. Go for dogs that are confident, happy, and obedient. When you decide to breed a dog, you should always meet the temperament requirements for every dog breed.

How can you determine the temperament of your dog? Each breed of dog often has a particular temperament test. For instance, if you have a Doberman, you should subject it to the Doberman WAC test. There is also a temperament test open to all dog breeds like the Canine Good Citizen test by AKC. Dog cubs offer such tests as well.

Now, some dog breeds are issued ‘obedience titles’. Even if you’re dog has this title, it is not a guarantee that your dog has good temperament.

Aside from temperament, you should also consider compatibility. In order breed a compatible stud and bitch, you should look into each of the dog’s pedigree. By carefully selecting the strengths, weaknesses can be offset. If you have a female dog, try to find a suitable stud for her. If you have a stud, you should also do the same. This particular stage already requires careful and adequate research. If you can’t do it alone, it would be best to consult an expert or a knowledgeable individual.

Even if two dogs look great together, it does not necessarily mean that they are compatible. You must look into the history of the dogs. Do they possess the same qualities? Do they possess disqualifying faults? Do they overbite? There are still other questions that you need to answer before you can start breeding dogs.

Above anyone else, you’re the only the person who can tell if your dog is an excellent illustration of its particular breed. If it’s not, there is no reason for allowing it to reproduce. If your dog has few faults, you can still correct it by finding a good partner. However, the situation is different if you have a mediocre dog. Always look into the breed standard for each dog. Ask a more experienced breeder so that your dog can be evaluated properly.

If you think that dog breeding is just about checking the temperament and compatibility of the dogs, you’re wrong because there are still other important considerations.

When breeding dogs, you should have a facility that is safe and secured. If you plan to breed dogs at home, you should designate a certain room for the dogs. The cleanliness should be maintained at all times. By combining these things together with a good veterinarian, you will have beautiful pups in no time. Always keep in mind that it is important to check the temperament and compatibility of dogs.

So if you want to become a good breeder, you should also be well-equipped. Knowledge about these things will be your key to success.

Dog Breeding – Caring for Pups

Dog breeding requires you to pay attention on proper caring for pups. When your puppy is already 3-days old, you will need to decide whether you will dock-a-tail or remove dewclaws. This should be done at exactly 3 days after birth so that it will heal quickly and nicely.

If you’re dealing with purebred pups, you should record the birth date of the pups. Try to keep a record book so that you will have a list of all the puppies, including the dead ones. The pups should be registered and so you need to prepare the registration forms. Buyers of the pups will surely look for the registration once they purchase them. The registration form should be submitted as early as possible because the registries are processed in about 6 weeks.

For the first 2 weeks, pups are usually kept clean by the mother dog. But still, you need to ensure the cleanliness of the whelping box. The bedding should be maintained clean at all times and so you need to remove the dirty and messy beddings at least twice daily. On the third week of the puppies, they will already eliminate and so your task will double.

After a month, the pups are already more active and so the space of the box is insufficient. Get a larger pen for them to play on so that you can still ensure their safety. Keeping the pups is vital because in just a matter of hours, pups can devastate a garage or a room.

Weaning food is usually introduced on the fifth month. Since the puppy food is a bit dry, you need to mash it up a bit. Put a little warm water and leave it for 2 hours; then feed it to the pups.

On their sixth month, you need to take the puppies to the vet for their vaccinations and de-worm. The vet will check for hernias, heart murmers, and testicles of the males, eye problems, and deafness. It is very important that pups are checked for any defects or problems because in a month or so, you will be giving them to the new owners.

Let your pup socialize. Temperament tests are now available and you can subject them to such test. Your pup should not be aggressive because it might frighten potential buyers.

When the pups reach their seventh month, you can now call the individuals with deposits. Get all the necessary paperwork done and sort them out. Contracts like that for the neuter/spays should be prepared as well as the pups’ pictures.

As you may have noticed, the seven months seem pretty right? Well, that is, if you don’t encounter any problems. For instance, if one of the puppies has a hernia or heart murmer; or if a puppy is deaf… what will you do? What if your puppies have temperament problems? What if the mother dog dies or gets mastitis and other infections? What if the puppies are suffering from fading-puppy or swimmer-puppy syndrome? You should always prepare yourself for the worst.

Caring for pups when you’re into dog breeding is also like taking care of a child or baby. The pups require much attention and you need to help the mother dog in taking care of them. If you’re prepared, there is no situation that you can’t handle, no matter how difficult it is.

Dog Breeding to Earn Income

There are a great percentage of unemployed individuals all over the world today. Even if there are lots of companies offering jobs, it is still not sufficient enough to meet the growing demands of the people. This may be the reason why many individuals prefer to put up their own business. There are many kinds of businesses that you can put up like a dog breeding business.

For those who have pet dogs at home, perhaps it’s time for you to consider a dog breeding business. Some pet owners breed dogs but they don’t sell them. They simply want to increase their pets at home or they give the dogs as presents to their love ones. What about putting them for sale? It’s really a profitable business especially if you know how to do it.

You will not be putting your precious pet in danger. In fact, it’s a better way to keep your dogs safe and physically fit. Natural breeding is preferred by most dog breeders because it is quite affordable. Once you find a suitable mate for your dog, you can already start your dog breeding business.

Even if you have your own career at this moment, you can still carry on with a new business. Don’t worry about the place of business because you can do it at home. The risks are also minimal so there isn’t really a need to worry. With less risk, a dog breeding business has a high profitability potential.

You will simply designate a room at home or perhaps near the garage where you can breed dogs. You need to learn how to conduct dog breeding. Even if it sounds very easy, it’s a bit complicated. Without enough knowledge, you can’t effectively breed dogs. If you have a male and female dog, then you’re in luck but if you only have one, it’s also easy to find a mate. By accessing the internet, you can find a lot of dog breeding info resources that will help you in finding a mate for your dog. Another concern that you should immediately attend to is finding a good and experienced veterinarian in your area.

When breeding dogs, you need to have them checked regularly. This is one way to ensure that they are in excellent health. The vet will also be able to help you to determine the perfect time of breeding. The female dog should be observed closely so that you won’t miss the ‘heating’ time. Otherwise, you will wait for another six months. Make sure that during the ‘heating’ time of the female, you put them together in a safe and secured place. This is an ethical way of conducting the business.

If you’re lucky, you can get it the first time. In just a couple of months, you can already have puppies. The market is also easy to penetrate because most households want to own pet dogs. Even if you need to spend additional capital, it is quite low as compared to other kinds of business.

Make sure that the environment is healthy for your dogs. You must be a responsible dog owner in order to be a successful breeder. Learn how to breed dogs now and prepare all the necessary things you’ll need like kennels. Talk to your vet often and have your dogs checked regularly. That’s how you can be successful in the dog breeding business.

Dog Breeding – Studs

When you talk about dog breeding, the first thing that enters the mind is the female dogs since they are the ones who carry the puppies. But did you know that it is equally important to choose the suitable stud for her?

Good quality studs are hard to find and if you simply settle with the first stud that you come across, you might not be able to produce the best pups. There is extreme competition in the dog breeding industry and if you have a stud, what can you do in order to make your dog impressive and be noticed in the crowd?

You need to ensure that your stud is in excellent condition. Get him a certification which proves that he is free from joint problems. The perfect age for mating is two years just like the female although younger dogs already has a tendency to mate. The eyes should be regularly checked to ensure that your stud does not suffer from eye problems. Abnormalities are quite normal among dogs, especially in specific breeds but in order to be noticed, your dog should be free of any abnormalities as it can be passed on to the pups. There should be no brucellosis, thyroid problems, seizures, and heart problems. Let your dog undergo a temperament test to get a certification.

To increase the popularity of your dog, you should allow more exposure. Take your dog to the field or in dog shows. Let potential buyers see that your dog is in top shape and excellent health. Proven dogs command higher fees as compared to inexperienced or unproven dogs.

If you’re housing studs, you should already expect that the bitches or female dog will be shipped to you. You should have adequate facilities to board females in heat. The mating time can take a week to ensure that the female is impregnated and to prevent mis-mating. There are even times when proven dogs mate more than one female dog. Always keep a spare room to accommodate more than one female dog.

There are times when you need to intervene in the mating. Basset Hounds for example need intervention. If it is the first time for one of the dogs or both, the dogs will hardly understand what they are supposed to do. Don’t leave the dogs unattended because it can be very disastrous. There are also times when the female dog is not impregnated and you need to repeat the whole process the next season. Contracts vary and it depends on the agreement of the parties involved.

The compatibility of the dog pedigree is also important. Once the pups get bad or good points, it will always be attributed to your stud. If you want to earn good reputation, you must also be extra careful in choosing the female dog. By doing so, you can ensure that only good pups are produced.

If you’re dealing with new breeders (owner of the bitch), you should assist them during whelping and in caring for pups; make sure that you provide them the necessary assistance and when they have questions, try to answer properly. The reputation of your dog is at stake here so you need to be patient in dealing with the owners of the bitch.

Disputes may also arise so you need to prepare yourself for it because it can definitely affect your dog’s standing.

Dog Breeding and Joint Problems

Hip problems with different dog breeds should be identified at an early stage. If you think that smaller dogs are safe from joint problems, you’re wrong. Joint problems can attack any breed of dog at any point in time. Since you can’t be too sure if your dog is suffering from joint problems or not, this article can help you in determining if your dog has a problem.

The most common problem with dogs is hip dysplasia. This refers to the deterioration or malformation of the hip joint. The hip joint sits on a socket that secures the femur’s head. If the socket is excessively shallow, the condition is called hip dysplasia. This should be addressed immediately because if you leave it unattended, the dog can suffer from extreme pain especially when the cartilage is already destroyed. Asymptomatic dogs are not encouraged to be bred. Larger breeds of dogs are often affected by this problem but certain studies revealed that smaller breeds can also be affected like the Shetland Sheepdogs and Cocker Spaniels.

It’s not easy to tell if your dog has hip dysplasia. The dog should be radiographed. Only experts can give appropriate analysis. The vet can’t do this and you will be asked to send the hip x-ray to the Orthopedic Foundation of Animals in the US. The evaluation will be sent back to you after several weeks. If you live anywhere in Britain, Europe, and Canada, equivalent programs are also available but the certification varies depending on the dog’s age.

Certain organizations issue certifications for dogs aged one year and above while other organizations entertain only the requests for dogs aged over two years. Find an organization that issues the appropriate certification.

Another joint problem is OCD or Osteochondrosis Dessicans. This problem is concentrated on the elbow. This happens when the flake or bone spur wears out and it brings about stiffness and a lot of pain. In order get the exact evaluation, you will need an x-ray of your dog’s elbow joint. Dogs who are currently suffering from hip dysplasia may also be suffering from OCD.

Patellar Luxation is another joint problem. It affects the dog’s kneecaps and if you’re breeding smaller dogs, beware as they are more prone to this condition as compared to larger dog breeds. When the kneecap slides out of its place, it will lock the dog’s leg straight. Don’t worry because after accurate diagnosis, your dog can undergo surgery. However, breeding dogs with this particular problem is not a good idea because this condition is hereditary. There is a high chance that the puppies can inherit the condition as well.

If you try to consult an expert, you will know more about the various joint problems among dogs. Aside from the conditions mentioned earlier, dogs can also suffer from hock (a spine problem). There are still many other join problems that you should know about. Before breeding dogs, you should already have adequate knowledge about the dog breed you’re handling. Research about their bloodlines and potential joint problems; since most of the conditions are hereditary, you should be extra careful when choosing the dogs you breed.

Being a breeder is not easy. Keep yourself well-informed so that you can be successful in dog breeding. Make sure that your dogs are healthy and in perfect condition.

Dog Breeding – Pros and Cons

In every activity, there will always be pros and cons. This is also true with dog breeding. As the breeder, you need to weigh these things before you finally set out to breed dogs.

If you think that dog breeding is inexpensive, you’re very wrong. It involves a lot of responsibilities and tasks that you need to carry out without delay. Health considerations are also vital and this should be closely observed both in the female and male dogs. The final decision should only be made after careful thinking and discussion with family members and of course, your vet.

Pros

Here are the pros or positives in breeding a female dog. It’s really rewarding to be able to produce the best-standard puppies. The feeling is also different once you find a suitable home for the pups. Make sure that you choose only the loving and caring individuals so that your puppies won’t end up in animal shelters.

You may be able to develop championship lines of dogs. The kennel will have increased awareness if one of your pups is proclaimed champion.

Cons

As a breeder, you need to be aware that different dog breeds have different unique characteristics and issues. As a breeder, there are certain negatives or drawbacks that you may encounter.

Stud services are quite costly especially the popular and experienced ones. If you want to opt for the championship bloodline, you will need to spend hundred to thousands in order to access a purebred male.

The female dog is weaker than the male and so she is more prone to health risks. Some female dogs get injured during mating while others develop certain conditions which can threaten the life of your bitch. When left unsupervised, your dog may die while giving birth to the puppies. It requires a lot of your attention which is inconvenient on your part especially if you have other things to attend to.

Once the female is impregnated, you will incur additional vet expenses because the female needs to be checked regularly. You will also pay for the vaccinations, shots, and other vet costs. It can reach thousands of dollars depending on how frequent you visit the vet’s clinic.

There will always be health issues concerning the puppies. If you want, you can make arrangements with the owner of the stud just in case health problems arise after the birth of the pups. Besides, problems or faults are usually attributed to the male.

Feeding and vaccinations of the pups are costly as well. You must give only good quality pup foods and at the same time, you should also make sure that the female regains her strength. Again, you need to go back often to the vet’s clinic.

In most females, there is the possibility of ongoing health problems. Be on the look out for breast cancers and ovarian cancers because females who gave birth are more prone to such conditions.

Have you tried computing the costs of dog breeding? If you’re going to do it for business, the income you might earn may not be enough to cover the expenses not unless you’re going on large-scale breeding. However, if you’re going to breed for personal reasons, it’s a rewarding activity.

So, is dog breeding right for? Think about it and carefully consider the pros and cons involved.

Dog Breeding and Newbies

There is always a first time in everything. The successful breeders that people know today also once were a beginner like you. Don’t be discouraged by the challenges that you’re going to face because of you’re determined to become a breeder and you have the passion for it, you too can become a successful dog breeder. And who knows, you might become extremely popular in the dog breeding business?

You must admit it... dog breeding is really tough especially for newbies like you. You will need to invest money, time, and effort. Don’t plunge into something that you hardly know anything about. So the key here is to research, research, and research. As you can see, you need to do a lot of research about dog breeding. With knowledge comes power but the actual situation is different. Once you’re equipped with the right knowledge in dog breeding, you should consult an expert breeder. Visit his place and see how things are doing. By doing so, you can feel the actual dog breeding experience.

Why don’t you get a female dog to start out? It should be two years old because this is the perfect time for breeding since the female is already capable to care for puppies. You need to get a good female. Make sure that the female is registered and the best in her breed. She should not possess any genetic faults and health issues.

After finding your female dog, you need to find a stud. Some studs are for sale while others can be accessed by paying a fee. Reputable and popular dog breeds are expensive but if you want to produce the good looking puppies, you should opt for the experienced studs. Even if your friend has a stud, forget about it. Get only the best. You can check out the kennel club in your area. Look for the certification of the dog and after clear arrangements, you can now bring your female to the stud for mating. This arrangement is much better so that the owner of the stud can assists the mating process. First time females can be very tricky so you need expert help.

If you’re going to do it for personal reasons (i.e. to have more puppies at home or you want to give it to relatives), it’s a fine hobby. For those who want to engage in business, you need to secure a permit. In some states, the law requires dog breeders to get kennel permits although in some states, they don’t. For legal protection, it would be best to have a permit. You see, you can’t exactly tell if you’re going to encounter problems or not. Of your neighbor complains about the barking of dogs at night, you will be protected if you have a permit but if you don’t, you’re in trouble.

So you see, being a newbie is not as extremely difficult as it seems. Well, it may be hard at first but once you start breeding, it’s a rewarding experience. Seeing cute puppies can really make you happy. Nothing beats seeing the happy faces of the new owners of the puppies when they leave your place. Again, learn as much as you can about dog breeding.

With the knowledge you’ve learned and the help of expert breeders and vet, you will definitely succeed as a breeder.

Different Dog Breeding Methods

Dog breeding is not as easy as you think. Many pet owners prefer to get purebred dogs these days. Even on the same breeds, breeding lines tend to produce different traits and types of dogs. As you can see, dog breeding is a complex undertaking and without adequate knowledge, you can’t be an effective dog breeder.

Dog breeders should be aware of the breed standards. However, dog breeding is often influenced by the personal likes or dislikes of the breeder when it comes to color, sizes, and types. What dog breed do you prefer? Does it possess its true characteristics? Is the appearance of the dog the same as what the books or other information sources say? What about its temperament? Is the breeding line of your pet healthy? You need to answer these questions before you finally choose a particular dog breed. Answering the questions is also vital should you decide to be involved in the breeding business.

There are a lot of considerations in dog breeding. You should be willing to invest time, effort, and money before you can see the fruits of your labor. Try to answer the questions above and if you can’t, you will need to dig in deeper. You need to research about the different dog breeds, the traits of different bloodlines, the appearance of the dam and sire, grand-dam, and grand-sire in a particular dog pedigree. Do you want to introduce improvements in the dog breed? Do you want to retain certain traits or qualities in the dog breed?

Breeding methods vary whether you’re dealing with inbreeding, out crossing, line breeding, or purebreds. You must be able to gather all the information you need about dog breeding. Keeping yourself well informed will make you a better dog breeder. You can read books on dog breeding or you can do some online research.

Cross breeding is one of the methods of dog breeding. In this method, dogs of different breeds are used. You can’t expect to produce the best dog breeds if you use the cross breeding method. If a problem occurs with regards to the traits of the dogs, you can’t easily track down where the problem came from.

The next method is out breeding. This is a complicated method and only experienced breeders can perform it. If a certain dog breed has a problem or defect, you can make improvements through out breeding. You must have a mate which posses the particular trait that you want to improve. The breed should possess such trait up to that last 3 generations. After the out breeding, the dogs are bred back to the original breeding line. New breeders are not encouraged to do out breeding because this not a good way to start a breeding program especially if you have plans to produce constant breeds with the same soundness and temperament. Educate yourself thoroughly before you consider out breeding.

Line breeding is another method in dog breeding. In this method, closely related dogs are bred to produce the same quality traits, size, and temperaments dog breeds. This method should be performed properly to ensure success. Breeders who want to concentrate mainly in one dog breed should be involved in line breeding.

These are the three dog breeding methods that you should know if you have plans of breeding dogs as a form of hobby or even for business.

Dog Breeding – Placing Pups in their New Homes

A lot of dog owners these days started breeding without definite plans in the future for the puppies. Some of them bred dogs because their relatives and friends wanted to take one of the pups; but what if no one took the pups? What will you do?

Dog placing is vital because you can’t possibly take care of all the puppies once they grow up right? Well, if you’re that rich, you may be able to give the puppies a decent home. What if you can’t?

On the pups’ sixth week, dog breeders are already preparing for the placing of their pups. Six puppies are too much to handle and it can ruin your home if you leave them unattended. At this age, the puppies are curious and they prefer to wander around and explore their surroundings. This is the best time for socialization. As a dog breeder, it is your responsibility to provide them enough space for exploration and socialization but at the same time, you need to ensure their safety.

On the seventh to eight week of the puppies, you can already start looking for potential buyers or new owners. At this age, pups are more comfortable in dealing with other people. However, in the case of insecure pups, you need to give them more time. Did you take your pups for temperament tests? So what’s the result?

Placing pups in their new homes entails a lot of legwork. You need to ensure that their new owners are responsible enough to care for your pups. It’s also not a good idea to sell the puppies at the very first customers that pass by. There are even times when you need to consider selling the pups somewhere else and not just in your area. You need to ensure that the pups won’t end up in animal shelters. What if a buyer returned the pup? What will you do? Can you afford to keep the extra pups as additional pets? All these questions should be answered before you started dog breeding.

When a potential buyer approaches you, you should conduct a bit of background check. Try to check what kind of work they do, how many kids they have, where they live, if they pets at home, and other related things. If you want, you can create a questionnaire for them to answer or you can interview them personally. It’s very important that you get a glimpse of the life of the buyer so that you can at least tell if the new owner can handle the responsibility of taking care of the pup.

Once you checked the background of the buyer, you can now decide to sell the pup. The papers should be prepared especially the license of the pups. Make sure that you submitted the registrations of the pups early on so that by the time you sell the puppies, the registration papers are ready to go.

If the rest of the pups are not sold, you can give it as a gift to love one. You can also ask your relatives if they are willing to care for a new dog. If you still end up with the rest of the pups, you will need to care for them until they grow up. Who knows? The dogs might be good for breeding more puppies.

Hypoallergenic Dog Breeding

Who says you can’t find hypoallergenic dogs? Some individuals are quite sensitive to pets, even pet dogs. Here’s good new for you – there are hypoallergenic breeders of dogs and it’s quite easy to find them. You should be extra careful when choosing pet dogs because there are dishonest dog breeders out there who sell the wrong dogs.

Firstly, you should try to do investigate a little. Try to know more about the dog breeders in your local area. That way, you will know which breeders provide the best pets, particularly the hypoallergenic ones.

Make use of the internet and the local library. You can find a lot of information there about hypoallergenic dogs. There are only specific breeds that are considered as hypoallergenic. Since these dog breeds are different from other dogs, you should learn as much as you can about them. Try to discover how to deal with their moods, living conditions, and know how to properly care for them. The pictures of the dogs are also available and so you can see their physical appearance. Don’t forget to ask for the price. If you’re lucky, you can find an affordable dog breed that suits your needs and taste.

Once you’ve chosen a particular dog breed, you can now start researching about the different dog breeders in your locality. Dog breeders often advertise online, on vet offices, bulletin boards in your community, and on the newspaper. Visit only the licensed dog breeders to ensure quality of the dogs. You also need to check with the local agency if the dog breeders are indeed licensed. You will also find out if the dog breeder offers the dog breed you like.

Once you’ve proven that the breeder is licensed, you should check out their facility. By visiting the place of the dog breeder, you will see if the environment is safe and friendly. This is very important because a well-kept dog is friendly and playful. Tell the breeder about your preferred dog. Once he or she brings the dog to you, check their eyes, coat, and skin. This is a very effective way to tell if the dog is healthy or not. With the researches you’ve conducted earlier, you can easily tell if the dog breed is healthy.

The price of the dog breed varies. A pure bred dog can cost hundreds of dollars so you need to get a breed that you can afford. Return policies are not offered by most dog breeders. If you think that the price of the dog is too low or too high, you should check out with other local breeders. If you have any suspicions, you should tell the breeder frankly.

If you have dog allergies, you need to spend more on the hypoallergenic breeds. These dog breeds are more costly than regular dogs but it’s worth the investment. It’s a good idea that there are now hypoallergenic dogs for those who want to own pet dogs despite their allergies.

You can start looking for the perfect dog breed in your area now. If you deal only with the licensed dog breeders, you’re sure to get high quality pet dogs at a reasonable price. Prepare your money now because it’s going to be a bit of costly to get hypoallergenic dogs. It’s all worth the money and effort because you can bring home a lovable pet for the whole family to enjoy.

Dog Breeding Essentials

These days, good puppies are quite expensive. This may be the reason why individuals are getting into dog breeding. Should you become a dog breeder yourself?

Breeding dogs will not exactly make you a millionaire. People have various reasons for breeding dogs. Some of the reasons are good but there are also those who have bad intentions. Crowded shelters for dogs are typical and so you need to continue reading if you want to make an informed decision.

For dog breeding, you need to have at least a 5-generation pedigree. Dogs like this are champions when it comes to fieldwork, obedience, and conformation. You can’t possibly do in-breeding and so you need to choose a suitable stud in your area or in other places.

You need to ensure that your dog is in exceptional condition. Every dog breed has a particular AKC standard to follow and your dog should be able to comply with the standards. Check out the AKC standard first before you breed any dog.

Dog breeding requires a lot of time, passion, and patience for dogs. It also involves a lot of expenses which you need to pay. Looking for a possible dog mate for your particular dog breed takes some time and if you want to get only the best deal, you must be willing to invest your valuable time. You must have passion for what you’re doing and most specially, you should be patient. Dogs can be very hard to handle but you should be patient in dealing with them; you should not beat them unnecessarily.

To some dog owners, it will be a lot better to put up a poodle salon or a dog kennel rather than breed dogs. But if you’re really convinced that you can earn a lot of money by breeding dogs, go on and try it out.

How much does dog breeding cost?

Purchasing a female dog is the very first cost that you incur. Pick the right breed and make sure that it’s popular. However, those that have female dogs will have other concerns to attend to. For purchasing a female dog, it can already cost you around $800. In order to breed effectively, the female dog needs to undergo a series of tests like hip x-rays, thyroid tests, and eye tests. By doing so, the vet can identify if your female dog has dysplasia, cataracts, and other diseases.

These different tests can reach as high as $300. Responsible owners will see to it that the tests are completed to ensure the health of the puppies. However, some female dog owners still opt not to have their dogs checked because they claim that they can’t afford to pay for such expenses.

Female dogs should be at the right age (2 years and older) before you can subject them to breeding. During the early years, you will spend about $1,000 for the vitamins, toys, and food of your pet. Minimum stud fees range from $400 to a few hundred dollars more. Routines exams are required once the dog is pregnant. That will cost you another $500 or so.

Can you still consider dog breeding as an affordable venture? Try to think about it. If money is not a problem, you can proceed. Special equipments are also needed like hemostats, towels, tweezers, baby scales, suction bulbs, and many others. Decide now and see how things work for you.

Dog Breeding – How to Find a Dog Mate

If you have a female pet dog, you might be thinking of breeding her in the near future. You can’t really tell how long your dog will live and if she has puppies, there will be instant replacements. Training puppies may seem difficult but it can be a very rewarding task. You can even sell the other puppies if you like especially if there are too many of them already. Being a dog breeder is not easy and if you’re planning to be involved in dog breeding, you should find the right dog.

As a breeder, it will be your responsibility to take care of the puppies after birth. At some point, you will be attached to the puppies but you shouldn’t let emotions hinder your plans. You must prepare yourself because you need to let go of the puppies sooner or later.

Handling new born puppies may seem a tough job but you must first look for the right mate for your dog. You can breed your dog when she is already two years or even older. You see, breeding very young dogs may not be a very good idea because the mother dog may not be responsible enough to care for the puppies. When you finally start breeding, you must also see to it that you’re dog gets the right shots at the right time. Try to schedule an appointment with the vet so that you can easily choose the perfect partner for breeding. So, can you handle the tasks involved in breeding dogs? If you can, why don’t you start looking for a dog mate?

Finding a dog mate can be very tricky. It will often depend on the particular dog that you have. Popular dog breeds are easy to find. If you can afford to pay for an advertisement on your local paper, you may do so because this is an excellent way to let other people know that you’re breeding dogs. Don’t forget to check out dog breeding websites because you might be able to find helpful information there too. Another option is through word-of-mouth. Start by informing your family, friends, and relatives that you’re looking for a dog mate.

By putting all these things at work, someone will know about it. When you finally find a dog mate, you should talk to its owner. Contact the owner and set up a meeting. Ask for the breeding charges or fees. That way, you can immediately determine if the price is reasonable. If you can’t afford the fees, you can still search for other owners of possible dog mates for your dog.

There are those who set a standard fee for dog breeding and when the puppies are bon, they will be privileged to pick one of the pups. Taking care of puppies is really fun and exciting. Don’t get too attached though; that way, when it’s time for the pups to leave, you won’t get hurt.

Start breeding your female dog now. Choose among the options available so that you can easily find the owner of a possible dog mate for your dog. By investing some of your time, you can gain a lot of money once you sell your pups. Dog breeding is a profitable business and if you can penetrate the market. Pick the best dog breed which is saleable.

Dog Breeding for Conformation and Performance

The most common method of breeding dogs is conformation. The produced puppies conform to their breed standards as established by a certain registering body. If the dogs are registered with AKC, the standards set by AKC should be observed without room for faults. Dogs resulting from conformation breeding are usually showcased in dog shows where the same breeds compete with each other to find out which breed is the best. The dogs can also compete to determine the best dog in the group.

When breeding for conformation, a breeder needs to consider different factors like coloring, gait, bite, size, and physical characteristics. Breeders in this category are extra careful in choosing a specific dog breed. They strictly follow a breeding program and the dogs involved are the excellent specimens of their breed. Dogs with certain faults are not used because experts believe that such faults can be passed on to the pups. Faulty dogs are often neutered or spayed and they are shipped to dog homes.

Some dogs are bred for performance like those involved in sports like flyball. The dogs used in breeding are those with excellent athletic abilities. Structure and appearance is not a vey important factor when breeding for best performance. Two dogs of different breeds can be mated as long as they possess jumping abilities and speed. Breeders only hope that the pups will also possess the same qualities. A very good example is the breeding of Border collie and Jack Russell terrier. In the sports community, the dog is known as BorderJack.

When breeding dogs, you should be a responsible breeder. Whether you’re breeding for conformation or for performance, being responsible is a trait that you should possess. This is also true with other business and tasks. If you’re irresponsible, you will not go anywhere.

It is vital that breeders choose only the best of the breed and that such dog don’t possess faults and any other genetic problems. This can only be done after thorough examinations, tests, and evaluations which can get very expensive. You should be willing to invest time, money, and effort if you want to become a successful breeder, whether for personal or business reasons. Before you start breeding, you should first have a good quality home to house the female and male dogs.

You should be willing to invest time because during mating, you should give your full attention to the dam and sire since there are times when intervention is necessary. Don’t forget about being ethical in your chosen field because animal rightists are against breeding. Develop a breeding program and make sure that you follow it carefully. Establish a healthy environment for the dam and sire, as well as for the pups.

Try to conduct a research on the suitable dog breeds that you can use for conformation breeding. You should also do the same if you’re going to be involved in performance breeding. In any case, extensive research is necessary to ensure success. You should also seek expert help so that nothing goes wrong. Consult with the standards of AKC and other organizations. You should not hesitate to ask for help from the experts especially if you’re a beginner.

Dog breeding should be considered as a serious business because the responsibilities involved are huge and quite difficult. Breed dogs if it is your passion.

History of Dog Breeding

Studies revealed that humans already loved pets even during the pre-historic days. For thousands of years, man has established a good relationship with specific dog types. Useful dogs are treated nicely and are fed regularly. As years passed, domesticated dogs were developed and at present, there are already different groups or types of dogs like the sight hounds, guardian or livestock dogs, and the hunting dogs. To maintain such differences, the people intentionally mated different breeds to uphold certain characteristics.

Purebreds were for the rich and famous but that was years ago. Dogs today are more affordable because of the extreme competition in the dog breeding industry. Some breeders concentrate mainly on purebreds while others focus on mix breed or cross breed dogs. There are different types of breeding such as inbreeding, line breeding, and out-crossing.

Dogs should be registered with the dog registry like kennel clubs. Owners of studs should also be registered so that you can receive the necessary documents. The American Kennel Club or AKC is quite popular in the US and you can find a huge database of all the dogs there with their respective lineage, working qualities, and achievements. These dogs are also the ones who are associated with the kennel clubs in the US.

Purebreds also have their own records in the registry. Dog breeders are encouraged to check with the registry to learn more about a particular dog breed. The records can help a breeder in analyzing the traits, pedigrees, and other valuable information. The registration of purebreds and mixed breeds vary depending on the state you live in, the registries, and kennel clubs. A certain breed already has an established standard that breeders should follow. They must abide with the rules to ensure the health of dogs.

Dogs are required to undergo hip certifications, joint X-rays, and even eye exams. Special tests or trials should be passed by your dog to get the certification. An expert will evaluate your dog’s working qualities and other factors before a certification is issued.

The new breeders are often called backyard breeders. Those mass producing businesses are called puppy farms or puppy mills. Dog breeding is considered unethical by animal rightists. But it’s up to the dog breeder to practice ethics in the conduct of his business.

These animal rightists claim that inbreeding dogs should not be encouraged because genetic disorders are increased. They also claim that there is already an overpopulation of pets in the world today and they also protest against the yearly killings of dogs in animal shelters.

Dog breeders are already aware that dogs possess inheritable characteristics just like humans. It is therefore very important that only the good genes are passed on to the puppies. Among the common hereditary problems are hip dysplasia, eye problems, heart conditions, deafness, bone or joint, etc.

Dog registries and breed clubs are conducting extensive studies on these conditions so that breeders will have adequate information on how to prevent such genetic defects. The OFA (Orthopedic Foundation of Animals) is also collecting useful data for the benefit of dog breeders.

Dog breeding is rich in history. For thousands of years, people cared for dogs and it’s no wonder that dogs are closest to man of all the animals or pets. So, do you want to become a dog breeder? Decide now.

Dog Breeding the Ethical Way

Dog breeding is not just a regular kind of business. If you’re a sensible person, you will understand that dog breeding also requires you to conduct your activities the ethical way. Ethics is always in question when it comes to breeding dogs and so you need to double your effort to ensure success.

If you’re only after the money, you will not get anywhere in the dog breeding business. You need to balance profit and morale to ensure business success. There are ethical guidelines that you need to follow.

There are certain factors that you need to consider. Developing your skills in communication is vital if you want to convince buyers to patronize your business. If this is your first time to be involved in the dog breeding business, you should try to learn as many information as you can. You can read books about dog breeding or you can conduct a research online. There are also eBooks on dog breeding. You must be able to create a friendly environment to your dog. When grooming your dog, you should provide a safe environment.

Find a licensed vet in your area. You will need a professional caregiver if you want to make sure that your dog is healthy. You can’t expect to make big money instantly. You need to be patient and because this endeavor takes time. Being in the business ethically will not give you a lot of money.

If you hardly know anything about dog breeding, you should start researching. It’s not a good idea to be in a business that you can’t handle effectively. By being equipped with the right knowledge, you will have a higher chance of success. Learn about the different breeding procedures. You can also consult an expert dog breeder who can serve as your mentor. You can’t learn everything by the book; actual experience is vital.

Buying your first breeds is very important. Expert vets can help you in taking care of your dogs. You need to learn about the dog’s proper nutrition, grooming, and nursing. Regular check up is also needed so that problems can be identified as early as possible. You should also start purchasing the various dog supplies and equipments like health kennels. The environment should be free from mud, dust, and other unhealthy factors. Try to maintain a tidy dog so that prospect buyers will be attracted once they see the pups.

Remember that it’s not a good idea to chain your dogs at all times. Giving them tooo much freedom will make them overly playful and friendly. Pregnant dogs should be well-attended too as well as the nursing dogs. Make sure that you give adequate attention and special care to the puppies. At some point, you may become attached to the pups but be prepared because you will be separated in a matter of days or weeks.

Being ethical in the dog breeding business may not give you lots of money or profits but you can be sure that you’re keeping your dogs happy. Other people will also appreciate your efforts and who knows – you might be able to sell the dog breeds easily. Ethical matters are extremely important to ensure success the right way.

Gather as much information as possible so that you can learn many things about dog breeding. Don’t hesitate to learn new stuff because you can use this in the future.

Dog Breeding – Genetics

Suppose breed x and breed y were mated. Both dogs are purebred and were able to meet with their specific health standards. Do you think that the breeding will result to healthier pups as compared to breeding them with the same breed? In dog breeding, this question is often asked and it needs immediate answers.

When you breed two top-shape and healthy dogs, it will always result to healthy and cute puppies. It doesn’t really matter if they come from different breeds (i.e. breed x and breed y). However, you’re not considering the recessives. What if both the dog breeds possess and is a carrier of recessive health problems? There is a high chance that the pups will also inherit the recessive problems. If the dog breeds don’t have any recessive health-related problem, then the pups won’t be suffering from any problem. The 1st generation ‘hybrid vigor’ explains the situation mentioned earlier.

Keep in mind that when one of the dogs is a carrier of a defective gene, the defect gene is not removed and it will stay with the pups. The next generation pups are likely to exhibit the problem. If both dog breeds are carriers of the defect, then their offspring will obviously demonstrate such defect.

In the case of purebred dogs, diseases are quite common as compared to mixed breeds. As a responsible and experienced breeder, you should always take into consideration the genetic makeup of your dog, whether male or female. Mixed breeds do possess harmful genes just like the purebred ones but it’s up to the breeder to do something about it.

Mixed breeds are often not tested and so when they are suffering from any health problem when they age, owners tend to blame it on old age. Most owners of mixed breeds no longer find it necessary to test the dogs to identify hereditary problems.

So what you mate breed x with breed y, variations are already expected to surface. For instance, when you mate toy poodles with cocker spaniels, the pups vary a bit. Some pups look more as poodles and the rest cocker-like. However, all the pups are shaggy, buff-colored, and small-sized dogs. When two cockapoos are mated, the resulting pups have wider variations. Some look like cocker while others like poodles. Hidden genes can surface on the 2nd generation.

Perhaps you’re already familiar with out-crossing. Two unrelated dogs are mated. The puppies produced are not uniform in terms of markings, color, coats, sizes, and in other distinct characteristics. The pups are considered heterozygous and so in the future, they might produce extremely different pups. This procedure is often used when breeders want to introduce something to a certain line of dogs such as better colors, front, head, etc.

You must be aware that even if dogs appear to be healthy, they might have genetic problems. Test mating is necessary to identify which dogs are affected. Tests are always required before mating to make sure that the produced pups are the best in order to be saleable.

Genetics can make it more complicated for dog breeders to mate different lines of dogs. It’s up to them whether they will conduct in-line breeding, out-crossing, etc. What matters is that only the best pups are produced. Be extra careful when mating dogs of different breeds and check out the genetic make up of the dog’s ancestors.

Dog Breeding – The Importance of Medical Checks

When breeding dogs, you need to have a stud and a bitch. Without them, you can’t produce puppies. Since the two dogs will serve as your tool to have puppies, you need to have them regularly checked. Medical checks are extremely important to ensure the health and overall condition of your dogs. If you want to become a full time breeder or you simply want to produce additional dogs for your family, you should know a great deal about dog breeding. If this is your first time, then you still have a lot to learn.

You can’t produce healthy puppies if there is sterility problems involved. If one or both parents have sterility problems, the puppies have very little chance of survival. They may be aborted or they can die later on. Are you aware that this condition can be transmitted to humans through feces or urine? This is true and as a dog breeder, you should be aware of it and not only that, you should also be extra careful when handling them. The condition is called brucellosis and it can also be transmitted to other dogs through sexual intercourse or through secretions found in the kennels of the affected dog. Vaccinations are important to ensure that the male dog is in general good health and the female should have the capacity to withstand the rigors and stresses of pregnancy.

Aside from brucellosis, you should also look out for other conditions that can compromise the health and safety of your dogs. Some dogs are deaf. Although it is hard to tell at first, with close observation, you may be able to identify this problem immediately. Have your dog undergo BAER test and if your pet is truly deaf, you should have your dog neutered.

Who says heart conditions are only for humans? Well, dogs can also suffer heart conditions. A very common example of a heart condition is the SAS or Subaortic Stenosis. Other problems are caused by malformations of the valves or the heart itself.

Other diseases to watch out for are Willebrand’s disease, hemophilia, digestive problems, malabsorptive syndromes, epilepsy, allergies, and incorrect temperament.

Dog breeding is not a very easy activity. Whether you’re doing it to earn extra income or just a simple past time, you should ensue the health of the stud and bitch, as well as their future puppies. Breeding involves a lot of research work. You should know a lot about the ancestors of your dog breeds. You can conduct an online research or you can read good books on dog breeding. If you can consult an expert breeder, you may do so because you can learn a lot from the pros. You can’t get it all the first time but if you’re in luck, a litter of healthy and cute puppies are guaranteed. Learn everything and don’t hesitate to exert a little effort. If you educate yourself, you will not find it hard to deal with dog problems.

Medical checks and dog breeding go hand in hand. You can’t possibly produce healthy puppies if you don’t have good male and female dogs. Find a local vet who can help you with the regular check ups of your precious pets. Now that you know the importance of regular check ups, make sure that you include it in your list of priorities.

Dog Breeding Problems

You can’t expect everything to turn out positively. There are times when you encounter problems and you need immediate answers. In dog breeding, be sure to expect some problems along the way. This is good practice so that you can prepare yourself. If you simply keep on thinking that everything will go smoothly, you will be shocked once you’re in a serious situation. You need to think positive but be prepared for the ‘what if’s’ of breeding.

To prepare yourself, here are the potential problems that you can encounter when breeding dogs. Such problems vary but if you’re aware of such problems and their possible solutions, you can easily overcome them once they pop up unexpectedly.

Birth problems – birth problems are quite common. As the breeder, it is your responsibility to keep a close watch when your dog is about to give birth. There are times when the bitch dies during giving birth. Can you stand such situation? Aside from possible death, some pups may be deformed upon birth and only a few little ones are normal. Another problem is that the female may still not be prepared to care for their young. If this is the case, you will act as the mother of the puppies.

You need to feed them through bottles or tube-feeding as the case may be. You’re lucky if your dog is impregnated the first mating time and then gives birth without any problems. By being aware that this is not always true, you can prepare yourself.

Compatibility of dogs – even if dogs look good together, it doesn’t mean that they are compatible. You need to ensure that the dogs are compatible before mating them. It would be best to mate dogs of the same breed. If you want to cross breed, you need to look into the genetic makeup and the ancestors of the breeds. This is to ensure that the pups are not going to inherit any faults or health problems. For instance, it’s not a good idea to breed a Saint Bernard and a Bulldog. The female will surely die while giving birth because the dogs are incompatible. Check with the breeding standards of each dog so that you can find a suitable mate.

Dog breeding is indeed an expensive activity. Many breeders think that they can earn huge profits in the breeding business. Well, this may be true with large scale producing puppies. But if you only have one female, this is not a good way to make money. The expenses you incur are too high as compared to the profits you’re going to earn. The costs can include stud fees, vet fees, and the pups’ expenses. Some breeders are not looking into the ‘money’ involved because they simply want to produce dogs that they can have as pets at home or if their relatives or friends asked for pups.

For those who want to try dog breeding, whatever your reasons are, it helps to know that there are lots of consideration. How much are you willing to spend and how much effort are you willing to exert? If you can answer these questions and if you’re ready to face the possible problems that go along with dog breeding, go ahead.

Just be ready to face such problems one by one as you encounter them and don’t give up easily.

Dog Breeding – Puppy Care

After your bitch gives birth to puppies, it is now time to care for them. Puppy care is not as easy as it looks. It entails a lot of responsibilities that you need to attend to as a breeder. Dog breeding does not end when your female dog gets pregnant; it is only the beginning.

For the pre whelping preparation, you should have a proper-sized box that is clean and sturdy. Try to incorporate some sort of ‘pig rail’ so that the mother dog won’t smash or lay on the puppies. The female should be able to move freely from one position to another inside the box but it should not be too big because the puppies might get lost in the box’s unused portions. Use a box that is more or less 6 inches longer and a foot wider from the sides of the bitch.

After you’ve chosen a whelping box, get clean plastic and newspapers. Arrange them in layers. First, put a sheet of plastic and on top, place several sheets of newspaper; place another plastic and several newspapers. Make 4-5 layers of plastic and newspaper. When you’re dog is placed inside the whelping box together with her puppies, you will simply roll-off the messy layer of newspaper and plastic. Dispose of it properly and you will instantly have another clean layer of paper and plastic.

Breeders have their own preference when it comes to preparing the whelping box. Some don’t like using newspapers and plastic because the puppies get dirty due to the feces and prints. There are those who use synthetic materials and they place it on top of the absorbent materials. Other breeders prefer to use about 6 inches deep of pine shavings. Well, no matter what you put inside the whelping box, you will still need to ensure that everything is clean from time to time. Get rid of any feces you see inside the box.

Newborn pups should always be kept comfortable and warm. You need to ensure that the temperature inside the whelping box is around 90 degrees Fahrenheit; then you need to decrease it about 2 degrees in the succeeding days. If the puppy chilled, don’t attempt to feed it. If you see any chilled puppy, keep it warm by tucking it under your shirt or even your armpit; you can also put it in a separate whelping box with a heating pad. Put a towel over the chilled puppy but you need to ensure that the temperature is not too high. Observe at the actions of the pups. When they are cold, they cry and clump together. When it’s too hot, the pups separate and try to finds a shade.

If the female gives birth to a lot of puppies, you should prepare supplemental feeding to ensure that all pups survive. You can also arrange shifts for the feeding time of the pups. Purchase a milk supplement for puppies. You can also consult milk recipes and don’t forget to get feeding bottles. However, if the pups won’t suckle, you need to tube-feed them.

Caring for pups requires time and effort especially of you have a large litter of them. Make sure that you know a lot of information about puppy care so that they can survive the most critical times of their life. Help your bitch in caring for her pups.

Dog Breeding and Hereditary Eye Problems

When you’re into dog breeding, you should be aware that there will always be potential hereditary problems. Although this is not true all the time, you should be on the look out for such problems because it can be passed on to the puppies. Keep on reading and you will find out what these hereditary problems are.

Firstly, you need to learn as much information as possible about the particular dog breed you’re handling. Thorough screening is needed so that you can prevent additional problems in the future. Make sure that you also look into the bloodlines of your dogs. This is necessary to ensure the health and condition of the pups.

Eye problems are the most common dilemmas encountered by most dog breeders. These problems are:

1.) PRA or Progressive Retinal Atrophy – if this problem is not addressed at an early stage, your dog can suffer from total blindness. Some breeds are affected by PRA once they reach 2-3 years or before the breeding period. In some cases, dogs tend to suffer from PRA when they are already 4-8 years. If you’re breeding Irish Setters, you’re in luck because there is already a PRA test which is available to those who want to breed them. It is vital that breeders identify if their dog is a carrier of the eye problem. You see, late onset of PRA can affect breeding programs.

2.) CEA or Collie Eye Anomaly – collie breeds can be affected by this eye problem which can include the border, bearded, smooth, rough, and closely related breeds. The condition varies wherein some dogs are hardly affected but others get completely blind. This problem is hereditary. Even if the dogs you’re breeding are not suffering from the CEA but serves as a carrier of the problem, it can produce a pup that is severely affected by CEA.

3.) Retinal Dysplasia – eventual blindness is the result of retinal dysplasia. The problem can start as early as the puppy days of the dog but late onset of the problem can make it hard to identify which dogs have it.

4.) Entropion and Ectropion – try to look closely at the eyelids of your dog. This problem refers to the eyelids turning in (entropion) or out (ectropion). This eye problem can cause pain.

Dogs registered under this foundation are free from any eye problems. It is vital for dogs to be checked annually to ensure that they are free from eye problems which are considered hereditary. There are times when the problems show up late but if you consult with CERF, you’re guaranteed to breed to a dog without potential eye problems.

Finding a mate – this is a very important task. You need to consider the female dog that you currently have. Try to imagine the puppies that your dog is going to give birth to. Find a suitable mate so that you will have good-looking pups.

The health of the female or mother dog - to ensure success in dog breeding, you should ensure the health of the female. A healthy pregnancy will give you healthy puppies. Giving birth will also be easier for your dog. Consult a vet and ask for the right kind of supplements to ensure proper nutrition.

It is also a good idea to maintain a record of the female and male dogs. It will serve as a history record of the behavior of the dogs. Take note of the times when the female is in heat; as well as medical issues and changes in the behavior.

Dog breeding will also require you to keep a good relationship with the vet. You will need his or her help during breeding, pregnancy, and when the dog finally gives birth. New pups should be closely observed by the vet to detect any abnormalities or problems.

Female dogs are usually prone to reproductive problems while male dogs are not that susceptible. Problems with female canines can be corrected easily but in the case of male dogs, like that of reproductive organ infections, low sperm, anatomical defects, hypothyroidism, spinal arthritis, and brucellosis should be addressed as soon as possible because this may affect the breeding interest of the male dog.

Failed breeding among females is primarily caused by wrong timing. Female dogs experience a long period of heat and so it can be a daunting to task to identify the perfect timing without the use of hormone tests. Ask your vet about the perfect timing for breeding. You’re in luck if you get it the first time. When the female dog reaches one year, she will start heating up but this is still not the best time to start breeding. You need to wait until she reaches two years or so.

The heat’s duration ranges from 10-12 days and it starts when you see the first appearance of blood. The female acts differently and you can easily notice changes in the behavior and temperament. Put the male and female dog together for a couple of days. You need to ensure perfect timing because you can repeat it again after six months.

When the female gets pregnant, your vet can tell after 22 days. You can now start looking for the new owners of the puppies. After several months, you can already give the puppies to the new owners.

Breeding is natural but you need to ensure that the environment is secured and safe. Perfect timing will also give you additional income when the puppies are finally sold to the new owners. Dog breeding is rewarding but you should be willing to spend time, effort, and money before you can enjoy the fruits of your labor.

Start now and look for the perfect mate.
